Is Life an 'Unalienable Right'?

President Obama must espouse the concept that life is an unalienable right endowed by God inasmuch as he invoked those words twice in his second inaugural speech recently.  This column will not challenge the Biblical aspect of those famous words in this great nation’s founding documents but will rather examine the president’s words and attempt to understand his perception of the meaning of ‘life’.

Human life is indeed sacred in the eyes of God.  First and foremost man and woman were created in God’s own image.

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”  Genesis 1:27

For the very reason that man is created in God’s image, man is required to pay for the taking of another’s life with his own life.  Hence; capital punishment was initiated centuries before Israel was ever a nation and never set aside.

“Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed; for in the image of God He made man.”  Genesis 9:6

A contemporary argument is whether ‘life’ begins at the point of conception or at physical birth.

The Bible records several illustrations that enhance understanding.  Recall that when Isaac took Rebekah as his wife the LORD gave her conception.

“Now Isaac pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.”  Genesis 25:21

Rebekah conceived twins and the Bible identifies both of them while in her womb and calls them ‘children’.

“But the children struggled together within her; and she said, ‘If all is well, why am I like this’? …And the LORD said to her: ‘Two nations are in your womb, two peoples shall be separated from your body; one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.’”  Genesis 25:22-23

The above passage confirms that not only were ‘children’ living in her womb, but God had established a purpose for both of them while they were still in the womb, i.e. before being ‘separated from your body’.

The Apostle Paul quoted the story of Isaac and Rebekah in the New Testament as an illustration of election.

As history progressed during the times of the kings, David acknowledged God’s sovereignty in his life which began prior to his birth.

“For thou hast possessed my reins; thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.”  Psalms 139:13 (KJV)

The Hebrew base translated ‘possessed’ means to be owned as a result of being purchased.  The base for ‘reins’ means one’s interior self, while ‘covered’ means to protect or defend.

There is another wonderful story of ‘life’ recorded in the gospels.  It involves Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist.  After Gabriel informed Mary of her mission, she went to visit Elizabeth who was six months pregnant with John.

“Now Mary…entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.  And… when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary,…the babe leaped in her womb…”  Luke 1:39-41

Recently following the terrible incident in Newtown, Connecticut President Obama addressed the nation with tears in his eyes expressing genuine sorrow.

All members of the Christian Brotherhood share his grief and bereave those innocent children taken without their mother’s consent.  The Brotherhood also sheds tears and bereaves the thousands of innocent children taken daily under the protection of Roe vs. Wade with their mother’s consent.

President Obama, while expressing sincere sorrow for the deaths of the innocent children at Newtown, openly supports late term abortions, and as a state senator opposed legislation which would have insured that babies who survived abortion attempts would be given medical care.

It challenges not only Biblical wisdom but basic reasoning that anyone would oppose capital punishment while enabling the taking of innocent life before that life was delivered from his/her mother’s protective womb.

At the conclusion of President Obama’s inaugural address, he stated: “Thank you, God Bless you, and may He forever bless these United States of America.”

Everyone can ponder the president’s closing statement and determine for themselves the likelihood that God will forever bless this great nation.

Satan Hates what God Loves

The title may seem obvious, but the implications may be more subtle than they seem.  Three things will be examined; the nation of Israel, the incarnate Christ, and individual believers.

When God called out the nation of Israel to be a light and example to all nations, He pronounced His love for them.

“The LORD did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the LORD loves you…”  Deuteronomy 7:7-8a

Satan has hated Israel from her calling and has attempted to destroy that nation and her future King from the time God set them apart unto this day and will continue his attack until his final demise.

“…a fiery red dragon…stood before the woman (Israel) who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born.  She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron…”  Revelation 12:3-5

Recall also that King Herod had all male children two years old and younger killed in an attempt to thwart God’s plan for Israel and her future king.

Then consider Jesus Christ Himself; God loves His Son who was born to defeat Satan.

“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.”  John 3:35

The purpose of the Son was also announced by the Apostle John.

“…For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”  1 John 3:8b

The enmity between Satan and the Son was originally announced in the Garden of Eden and will come to its conclusion in the future.

And then God loves those who love and trust His Son.

“…for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.”  John 16:27

Satan’s hatred for the believers can be better understood by considering his loss of heavenly authority and being relegated to the less glorious position of ‘ruler of this world’.

“…for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.”  John 14:31

The Greek base for ‘world’ is kosmos meaning in essence the present earthly order of things as opposed to the kingdom of God.  The idea is transience versus permanence.  It highlights the focus on the pleasures and enjoyments of this present life.  A basic premise is that maximum fulfillment is found during life on earth with little consideration given to eternal life, or the kingdom of God.

Satan tempts mankind to follow their natural instincts and fulfill natural desires.  Such a strategy is deceptive and is warned against repeatedly in the Bible. Inasmuch as Christ represents just the opposite, the world and its ‘ruler’ hate Christ and all of His followers.

“If you were of the world, the world would love its own.  Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”  John 15:19

Jesus pulls no punches with His followers.  He states that a person either follows Him completely or not at all.  There is no in between.

“He who is not with Me is against Me…”  Matthew 12:30

Now then, how does this all relate to daily life?

Thoughts and actions are either prompted by God or the enemy.  The source can be readily identified.  For example, who would prompt legislation or policies contrary to Israel’s well being?  Who would prompt legislation or policies to promote the legality of actions totally contrary to Biblical teachings?  Who would prompt legislation or policies that would remove references to Biblical truths such as simple nativity scenes during Christmas season?  Who would prompt legislation or policies that would remove references to the Cross at memorials, etc.?  Who would prompt legislation or policies that are aimed at pleasing men instead of pleasing God?

In reality, the source of every ideology or action can be determined with little effort.

And again, this is America and everyone has the freedom of choice and expression, or to believe or not to believe.

Biblically Dissecting the 'Fiscal Cliff'

The term ‘fiscal cliff’ has dominated the news in recent months.  The meaning centers on the role of government and how to fund its operation.  The cliff represented the consequences if proposed spending and taxing policy changes were not approved by both the Senate and House of Representatives.

The political ideology of the president and senate centers on increasing revenue to fund government operations via tax collection.  Taxes are certainly appropriate to fund government; however, the larger question is the role of government.

The primary role of government is defined in Scripture as maintaining law and order based on God’s standard of justice.

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.  For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.  Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God…For he is God’s minister to you for good… (And) an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil…For because of this you also pay taxes…”  Romans 13:1-6

The Bible also indicates maintaining a military is sanctioned by God which would require government funding.

“And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: ‘Shall your brethren go to war while you sit here’? …And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying: …‘Your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, just as my lord says.’”  Numbers 32:6, 25-27

In the New Testament Jesus spoke in a parable of the consequence of not funding the required military.

“…what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?  Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.”  Luke 14:31-32

Additionally the Bible describes wars that will be waged in the future.  Therefore, taxes are sanctioned to administer law and order plus maintain an adequate military presence.

Presently, however, some believe that government should have a much larger role in the lives of the citizenry.

Proponents of larger government participation believe that government should be a provider of benefits and services in addition to those sanctioned in the Bible.  Each additional proposed benefit and service can be weighed against scriptural precepts.  The epitome of depravity is when government funds are used to protect those who break God’s laws.  While some such additional government services are obviously anti-scriptural, others are more subtle.

One of the more subtle anti-scriptural ideologies held by the current administration is termed ‘the protection of the middle class’.  In essence the meaning is equalization of the nation’s wealth among all citizens which is accomplished by redistribution.  That is a flagrant attempt to usurp God’s authority.

“And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth.”  Deuteronomy 8:18

The attempt to provide more anti-scriptural benefits and services to citizens can lead to much more serious problems.  If there is a revenue shortfall and deficit spending is required, a government must resort to borrowing.

The Bible is quick to point out that one of the curses for a nation that disobeys God’s word is for that nation to be a borrower while blessings for a nation that obeys God’s words is to be a lender nation.  In addition:

“…and the borrower is servant to the lender.”  Proverbs 22:7b

Interestingly there are those at both ends of the political spectrum who claim membership in the Christian Brotherhood.  That is confusing inasmuch as there are many contemporary ideologies contrary to Biblical teachings.  Jesus shed light on such inconsistencies.

“You will know them by their fruits…A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit…”  Matthew 7:16-20

Therefore, the fiscal issues facing this nation can be evaluated to see if they are in sync with Biblical teachings.

Every individual has the freedom to choose whether to take the Bible seriously or dismiss it if they hold the conviction that politics and Scripture should not be intermingled.

Does America Really Know God?

When President Obama spoke at the prayer vigil at Newtown, Connecticut on December 16, 2012 he began by referring to Scripture.  His words were meant to provide comfort to survivors by pointing out the transitory nature of earthly life and the eternal nature of heaven for those whose lives were taken.  The following was taken directly from the transcript of his address.

“Do not lose heart.  Though outwardly we are wasting away…inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.”  2 Corinthians 4:16-5:1

To address the calamity in Newtown, it would be well to follow the example of the president and refer to the Bible for understanding.  Much can be learned about God’s standard of righteousness and justice and His dealing with His people from both the Old and New Testaments.  There are those who believe the Old Testament is now irrelevant; however, the New Testament definitely affirms the Old Testaments’ relevance in the present age.

“For whatever things were written before were written for our learning…”  Romans 15:4a

When Paul wrote to the church at Corinth he described the major events that happened to the Jews during the forty year period beginning immediately after the Exodus to just before entering the Promised Land.  As Paul recounted those events he stated:

“Now these things became our examples…Now all these things happened to them (Israelites) as examples, and they were written for our (present age) admonition (instruction), upon whom the ends of the ages have come.  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.”  1 Corinthians 10:6a, 11-12

In other words, the standard for God’s righteousness and justice is the same today as it was for Israel 3,500 years ago.

Just before entering the Promised Land of Canaan, Moses gave the Israelites very explicit instructions on how to obtain blessings by choosing obedience rather than curses for choosing disobedience.

“Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.”  Deuteronomy 28:1

“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you…”  Deuteronomy 28:15

During the lengthy discourse describing the curses for disobedience, reference was made to the future besiege of Jerusalem which would begin approximately 800 years later.

“The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar…They will besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land…”  Deuteronomy 28:49a, 52

Notice the significant wording, ‘The LORD will bring’.  In other words, the LORD would be more proactive in the impending disaster than simply allowing it to happen.  Notice further the reference to ‘your high and fortified walls, in which you trust’.  The people, having strayed from God’s instructions, placed their trust in what they themselves devised and built instead of trusting God for their protection.

The attack and besiege would be so terrible that both fathers and mothers would resort to cannibalism.  The victims would be their innocent children.

“You shall eat the fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and your daughters whom the LORD your God has given you, in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you.  The sensitive and very refined man among you will be hostile toward his brother, towards the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his children whom he leaves behind, so that he will not give any of them the flesh of his children whom he will eat…”  Deuteronomy 28:53-55a

Such desperate behavior as cannibalism is described in four books of the Old Testament.  Note the most unlikely type of man, i.e. ‘the sensitive and very refined man’ would resort to such a horrible practice.  The participation of the wife and mother in such a practice is then described in verses 56-57 which is even more graphic.

There didn’t seem to be a clear cut direct cause and effect relationship between the curse and the offense resulting in confusion as to why innocent children would suffer so hideously.

The seriousness of disobedience is then described further.

“If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book… then the LORD will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary plagues…also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the LORD bring upon you until you are destroyed.”  Deuteronomy 28:58-61

Notice again the words, ‘observe all the words of this law’ and ‘the LORD will bring upon you and your descendants’.  The LORD would also bring on Jerusalem ‘every sickness and every plague’ that men had not imagined i.e. ‘which is not written in this Book of the Law’.

History subsequently recounted the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonian king and the deportation of the Jews to Babylon for seventy years.

Near the end of the seventy year captivity the prophet Daniel sought understanding of Israel’s profound suffering.

Then Daniel fell on his knees before God and confessed the sin of Israel.

“And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, ‘O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments…O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face….”  Daniel 9:4-7a

Daniel confessed that the sin of Israel was they had rebelled and departed from God’s precepts and judgments.  He acknowledged that God was righteous while Israel was to be put to shame for their behavior.  The Hebrew base for ‘righteous’ is the same as the base for ‘just’, i.e. that which is right and just according to God’s absolute standard.

“…Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice, therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses…have been poured out on us…”  Daniel 9:11

Then Daniel acknowledged the curse that had befallen Israel was exactly as had been announced previously by Moses centuries earlier.

“And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us… by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.”  Daniel 9:12

Daniel acknowledged several significant issues, i.e. God confirmed His warnings relative to the curse that would follow disobedience; God brought on the disaster; and the disaster was of a magnitude never before experienced.

     Daniel continued praying:

“As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth.”  Daniel 9:13

Daniel realized that Israel had not previously acknowledged nor confessed their sin which would open the door for them to turn from disobedience and pursue the truth.

Then Daniel asked God to forgive and restore His people.

“O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem…O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations…for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies.  O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive...”  Daniel 9:16-19a

Daniel asked God to forgive all Israel for their sin of departing from God’s word.  Daniel acknowledged that forgiveness would be based on God’s mercy and not on Israel’s ‘righteous deeds’.

Was Daniel’s prayer received and acknowledged?

“Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God…yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel…being caused to fly swiftly... And he informed me… and said, ‘O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand…for you are greatly beloved…’”  Daniel 9:20-23

Then Gabriel explained to Daniel exactly what would happen to Israel in great detail from that time forward because Daniel sought wisdom and was loved by God.

The foregoing should aid in not only understanding the disaster in Newtown, Connecticut but should also shed light on the disaster of 9-11-2001.

There are many suggestions being offered relative to the Newtown tragedy aimed at preventing a repeat of such a great disaster.  Three proposed remedies include legislating new and stricter gun control laws; recognizing behavior in an individual which might be construed as potentially dangerous; and addressing the new culture/environment which is seen as conducive to violence.

Such myopic ‘solutions’ can be likened to Jerusalem’s ‘high and fortified walls, in which you trust’.  Then, as well as now, people relied on their own perceived defenses for any possible attack instead of simply trusting and honoring God by obeying His instructions.

One contemporary writer drew attention to the inconsistency of America’s societal rationale by stating: “The tragedy of the events at Newtown is that twenty of their precious innocent children were taken without their mother’s consent while millions of innocent children are taken under the protection of Roe vs. Wade with the mother’s consent.”

Recall this article began by proving via Scripture that God will deal with His people in the current age in the same manner as He dealt with Israel in centuries past.  That doesn’t mean that people will necessarily resort to cannibalism, but it does mean that continued disobedience to God’s laws and precepts will result in unspeakable disasters.

Is there anyone in leadership in this great nation who like Daniel would publicly acknowledge and confess America’s sin of disobedience to God’s word and pray for forgiveness and restoration?  Or does anyone in leadership even recognize how far we have strayed as a nation from God’s word?  And in sad reality, is there any leader in the ‘church’ that has the boldness to stand up and proclaim the truth?

Sadly, it appears that political correctness i.e. the desire to please men instead of God, has taken its toll and silence will be the rule of the day.

This great nation provides the freedom to accept or reject Biblical teachings even while considering the Bible’s proven historical record of prophetic accuracy and warnings of the future.

Does America really know her righteous and just God?  Or has America’s ‘new norm’ replaced confidence and trust in the very source of her blessings.

     Will America choose life, or…

Partisan Politics is not new

There is a detailed example of partisan politics found in the Old Testament foreshadowing two contemporary but profoundly different political ideologies.

Recall that King Solomon in an attempt to please his many wives became involved in idolatry.  That action brought severe consequences on himself and Israel.

“So the LORD became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the LORD God of Israel…Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, ‘Because you have done this, and have not kept My covenant and My statutes…I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.’”  1 Kings 11:9-11

The Scripture provides great details about how God raised up adversaries to Solomon and then in more detail describes the debate between the two contenders for the kingship of Israel.

“Now the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon…Then Solomon’s servant, Jeroboam…also rebelled against the king.”  1 Kings 11:14, 23, 26

The adversarial relationship was actually between Solomon’s son Rehoboam, the presumed king by lineage, and Solomon’s servant Jeroboam.

“…Then Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”  1 Kings 12:3-4

In other words, Jeroboam suggested that Solomon’s government required too much from the people and Rehoboam should lesson the burden imposed on the citizens.

Rehoboam listened to the proposal and told Jeroboam to give him three days to think about it.  Rehoboam then consulted his advisors who also had much wisdom having served his father Solomon.  They spoke from experience.

“And they spoke to him, saying, ‘If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them…and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.’”  1 Kings 12:7

Their advice was that the king should be a servant to the people and not that the people should be servants to the king.

“But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him, and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.”  1 Kings 12:8

The ‘expected to be’ king rejected the wisdom of the elders and sought the advice of the current generation and their ideology.

The younger generation advised Rehoboam on how to respond to the suggestion that government should become less intrusive.

“My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist!  And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!” 1 Kings 12:10b-11

The Scripture states that Rehoboam responded arrogantly as he rejected their proposal to minimize government intrusion.

The Scripture also states that all this was done to fulfill God’s word that the kingship would pass from Solomon’s family, temporarily.

“So the king (Rehoboam) did not listen to the people; for the turn of events was from the LORD, that He might fulfill His word…” 1 Kings 12:15

These events describe the division of national Israel into the northern ten tribes which would be referred to as Israel (and or Ephraim) and the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin would be known as Judah.  Jeroboam ruled over the northern tribes while Rehoboam ruled over the south.

“So Israel departed to their tents.  But Rehoboam reigned over the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah.”  1 Kings 12:18

God’s sovereignty is nearly incomprehensible in detail.  He executes His plan perfectly in whatever way He chooses.

“But the word of God came…saying, ‘Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, to all the house of Judah and Benjamin’… ‘You shall not go up nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel.  Let every man return to his house, for this thing is from Me.’” 1 Kings 12:22-24

Thus partisan politics has been active for thousands of years and will continue through this present age.

As Solomon said, “There is nothing new under the sun.”

Partisan politics will, however, cease to be during the millennial kingdom and thereafter.
